So why no posts for a week? Well, in a nut shell the camera arrived! What should have been a moment of jubilation and unrestrained snapping, unfortunately turned into incessant fiddling with settings to get a decent photo. Let's see what Panasonic has to say about this:
This bright lens offers approximately 170% brightness compared to the conventional F2.8 lens and assures high image quality even in low light condition
Well that sounds fine and dandy but let's let the camera do the talking. The pictures below were taken in two different locations with fluorescent lights on. Granted it isn't bright sunlight but the camera couldn't do any better than ISO 800 and the grainy factor is turned up to eleven!
The camera looks great on paper, so the question was how to get it to perform? After more disappointing results I declared the camera an official FAIL and returned it. That night I headed to Best Buy and instead pickup up a Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS. Slim, sleek and sexy is the easiest way to describe it. Canon proclaims it as the world's thinnest 24mm lens point-and-shooter.
Again, on paper it seems like a winner but let's our money where the shutter is:
These last two photos were taken at night, the first one has flash while the second does not. The shots were quick and off-the-cuff, they weren't meant to be artistic or creative, just to test basic performance.
In the end, the Canon scores major points for the simple fact that the shots aren't as grain at the same ISO levels.
Now, for some more eye-candy to close this Chaz-tastic post!
These last two pics were taken without flash and show no blur, and while the first pic has some softness in the background it'd pretty accurate on the main subject.
All in all, the ELPH 300 HS rocks!
