Weekend Update!

The great thing about summer? The fact that you're more compelled to do group activities as everyone awakes from hibernation and returns to a social life! There are many, many activities to accomplish while the weather remains above 70 degrees and before the official start of the season (now only 2 days away!) we've already been able to achieve of a few of those.

You can see in the picture above how we preferred the dark and damp surroundings of a go-kart track to gradually emerge from winter mode...not to be thrust outdoors too quickly!
Last week the plan was simple, kayak down the Farmington river and enjoy the views & exercise. Mother nature decided to intervene with a shower or two forcing us all indoors. Not to be deterred to have a good time we proceeded with a plan B of Go-Karting in Wallingofrd. Rivalries aside, it was a blast! Some of us were uncatchable (and will be made to walk the track next time...) while others were simply enjoying a leisurely drive (and causing massive backups). Topping out at 40 MPH, these karts are tiny but pack a punch. Tires skidding as you take hard corners and 180s you feel the G force as you come close to slamming into the walls in a couple of spots. The video below shows the track layout and Jesse completing a few laps.

So after 2 races each, our fair share of bumping & rubbing karts (and a few crushed egos!) we headed back for some ping-pong action. Deciding to randomize opponents sounded interesting...until we discovered the ITWorx crew are paddle fiends! Balls flying everywhere escaping our paddles and only hitting our pride - serve after serve we fought bravely but clenched defeat quickly.

This weekend we had a perfect plan laid out to finally kayak which was helped by Friday's rainfall - promising deeper and faster waters on the river. But as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. The good folks at Main Stream Canoe and Kayak decided it was too dangerous to go out based on the speed and depth of the water. Only having discovered this at 10:30 (with an 11:00 start-time planned) we scrambled to desperately save our Saturday. Luckily, Collinsville Canoe & Kayak had a 1.5 mile stretch of open wat...ehm...river for us to take on. With valiant efforts we attempted to beat some rapids and just when we thought we had bested the water, there we found ourselves paddling away only to remain stationary!

Having spend the afternoon flipping our kayaks, and bombarding each other with water from our paddles we proceeded to The Counter for some well-deserved nourishment bringing a great Saturday to a close...but not before snapping a few interesting shots of the group!

Steady hands would have helped this picture a lot!

A little better - but still looking like blurry cam action

Oh look, a fly. Must...stare...at....fly!

Finally, it only took 4 tries for a decent shot.
